Make Art in France

Brumley brother:sister textile
Durham Academy

During the fall of 2003, students at Durham Academy Upper and Middle school participated in a collaborative textile project to honor their beloved classmates; Jordan and George Brumley. Under the direction of textile artist, Peg Gignoux, Durham Academy students created a pair of art textiles. These mixed media works contain and combine deeply personal expressions of profound grief and marvelous memories of cherished friendship. Students activated cloth with their private thoughts and distinctive handwriting. The cumulative art making process included working on both fragile and heavily textured surfaces. Silk, canvas, paint and the opportunity to openly grieve, to remember and reflect were the essential elements in the creation of this distinctive tribute to the Brumley family. The Brumley brother:sister textile diptych was created to be a lasting memory and celebration of a remarkable family tragically lost in July 2003.

Durham Academy Upper and Middle schools each host a work in their respective libraries. When Jordan’s classmates rise to the ninth grade the two works will be permanently united in the upper school.
